You don't have to live in the dessert to be concerned about water availability. Countries can fluctuate from periods of drought to ones of high rainfall and flooding. Putting systems in place will help to manage water availability with greater levels of success. Containing water in systems such as steel water storage tanks is better achieved with the installation and protective coating of tank liner membranes- also used to line lakes, ponds and reservoirs.

The Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) has commented on the need for a drought and flooding strategy to be put in place including the construction of new reservoirs. Without a strategy the ICE said that the UK will continue to swing from flooding to drought. They went on to suggest measures such as water containment via new reservoir construction, sustainable urban drainage systems and rainwater harvesting, which will all help manage water better.
Currently water used in irrigation and agriculture is sourced in almost equal proportions from ground and surface water supplies. Ground water is pumped out from wells, boreholes and springs. Surface water is supplied via natural ponds, artificial dams, reservoirs and lakes. Synthetic rubber membranes serve an important function in water containment of reservoirs, ponds and lakes to prevent the lose of water.

When Russetts Development was contracted to refurbish Buscot Park's Petro Water Garden, they were faced with two unique challenges. Firstly, this project involved refurbishment of a Grade II listed water garden, which meant that no modern sealant solutions could be used in the installation of the liner. The second challenge was the complexity of the structure and that no pond liner membranes were to be visible above the water line.

Galvanised tanks are recognised as an economical way of storing liquids. They are used primarily to store water for fire sprinkler systems, potable water and the irrigation market. Lining them a rubber tank liner will extend the life of a tank and provide a long term cost effective alternative to replacement.

When a water storage tank starts to show signs of corrosion there is a growing risk of bacteria growth within the tank and this can lead to the risk of Legionnaires Disease. Lining a water tank is an effective way to stop this problem happening. Water tank refurbishment also offers major savings relative to investing in new tanks and the costs of relocating and filling them.

Membrane roofing is a type of roofing system for buildings to make flat or near flat roofs watertight. The use of rubber membranes has proved highly successful in roofing systems. Rubber membranes are elastic thereby offering great flexibility, chemically stable and don't release any toxins into the environment.

Despite the high rainfall we have had this year there are threats of rising water bills and water becoming scarcer in the future or periods of drought all of which are due to climate changes. We therefore need to consider water conservation seriously and be well prepared for such possibilities. In addition the Environmental Agency is keen that steps be put in place to reduce the need for clean water or mains water supplies. An industry that has shown steps to conserving water is Horticulture. Lake liners used in reservoir construction and water storage tanks have enabled the successful collection and storage of rainwater.

Water tanks can be found on residential, commercial or industrial properties. They are used for many different types of applications, though fundamentally their sole purpose is for storing water. Corrugated types are lined with a tank liner to keep them water tight and to preserve the tank long-term. They are installed to supply water for main uses mostly with the aim to reduce mains supply usage and as a contingency during times of drought.

Fresh water wildlife habitats are being threatened by pollution intense farming and urban development across much of the UK. As a result there is a drive to increase the number of ponds and lakes available to wildlife plus an improvement in the maintenance of existing water sources. Lake liners help with the maintenance of the water required for the healthy habitation of wildlife.
