What is the difference between a box welded pond liner and a customised liner?

Box-welded and customised pond liners are both used for the water containment of pond builds. They both perform the same function but there are differences in their design and manufacture specifications.

Box-welded pond liners explained

A box-welded pond liner is pre-fabricated into a rectangular or square shape with welded seams at the corners creating a box-like structure.

Box-welded pond liners are designed to fit formal shaped ponds with vertical sides so are easy to install.

Customised pond liner

Also referred to as tailored-to-fit pond liners because they are fabricated to the exact specifications of your pond and not limited to square or rectangular. A customised pond liner is usually fabricated on-site.

This type of pond liner offers design flexibility accommodating irregular shapes and sizes to create unique pond builds.

Tailored to fit pond liner or customised pond liner

Whether you choose a box-welded or tailored-to-fit pond liner depends on your specific needs and design preferences. If you want a simple, cost-effective solution, a box-welded liner might suffice. However, if you want a unique shaped, vertical-sided pond design and are prepared to invest more financially into your pond build, then a customised liner would be appropriate.

Both types of liners are often used to line Koi pond builds. water feature designed to home Koi should ideally be designed to last a long-time (i.e. 25 to 40 years or more). Box-welded and customised liners are made from high quality, UV resistant, highly durable rubber liner material such as Butyl or Epalyn (also known as EPDM).

We have worked on many exciting bespoke projects over the years including onsite fabrication of customised tailored-to-fit rubber pond liners to fabricating box-welded liners at our factory in Milton Keynes to meet specific design measurements and then helping customers with the installation.
