Water storage tanks are used in many different types of industries such as agricultural, fish-farming, fire-fighting and fire protection, sports turf irrigation, mining and construction. Water storage tanks also play an important role in rainwater harvesting. Above ground or ground level tanks are the most common forms of water storage and the most economical to fabricate, erect and maintain. A roof to the steel water storage tank stops debris falling in and can also assist in adding a more appealing look to the tank which may otherwise be considered to have a negative environmental impact.

The growth of the Agricultural and Horticulture industry in the UK is dependent on a direct access to water. The primary production of food has a knock on effect on the country’s food processing capacity, jobs and local economics. Crops need clean water and livestock need drinking water combined with the growing competition for mains water supply. Reservoirs and water storage tanks are an option presented to the agricultural industry to use non-mains supply.

Water storage tanks vary in size and the material they are constructed from plastic as is common for domestic rainwater harvesting, to concrete and galvanised steel tanks as used in irrigation, industrial and fire-protection. Tanks can be above or below the ground according to preference. Water storage tanks built above the ground are less costly because the is no digging or planning permission required. Above ground storage tanks will need a roof installed to protect against debris of all types falling into the tank.

Refurbishing a water tank is very important to ensure you have a tank that will have last a long time without contaminating your water or needing regular maintenance. Many people do not realise that the maintenance of a water tank is crucial as corrosion takes place over time and eventually leads to the tanks failure. Those who fail to refurbish their water tanks get into unnecessary expenses as they would lose the existing tank and will have to now replace it with a new one.

Rain water always seems to be in great supply in the UK, so the question asked by many is whether it really is worth installing a metal water storage tank? A number of factors would need to be considered to quantify their value. This can be worked out by calculating water savings over a long-term period of 10 years or more.

Galvanised storage tanks offer an economical, reliable and low maintenance means of water storage. Galvanised tanks are typically used for potable water storage, fire-protection industry water storage and water for irrigation purposes. When sealed with a geotextile protective membrane and a flexible rubber tank liner, they are guaranteed to store water safely.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber liners are extensively used for a number of different applications. The flat sheet liner can be fabricated for lining garden ponds, irrigation and slurry lagoons, lakes and reservoirs. EPDM liners are also used for bespoke projects such as the fabrication of box-welded liners for ornamental vertically-sided ponds.

There are many types of water storage facilities for fire protection. Constructed types include elevated, ground-level or below the ground metal or rubberised storage tanks. Natural storage facilities include ponds, lakes and reservoirs. To be effective in water containment, water storage facilities need to be managed and maintained to regulation standards to guarantee supply in the event of a fire.

Automatic fire sprinkler systems have been an essential feature of industrial fire protection systems over the past one-hundred and fifty years. They are proven to be efficient in controlling and extinguishing fires to protect the lives of people, properties and its contents. An essential part of fire protection is the guaranteed water supply. Water can be directed from a local mains water supply or, more reliably by having water stored in a tank and delivered via a pump to the buildings sprinkler system. To limit the need for replacing or refurbishing a tank, they are protected by lining them with a tank liner.

You don't have to live in the dessert to be concerned about water availability. Countries can fluctuate from periods of drought to ones of high rainfall and flooding. Putting systems in place will help to manage water availability with greater levels of success. Containing water in systems such as steel water storage tanks is better achieved with the installation and protective coating of tank liner membranes- also used to line lakes, ponds and reservoirs.

Despite the high rainfall we have had this year there are threats of rising water bills and water becoming scarcer in the future or periods of drought all of which are due to climate changes. We therefore need to consider water conservation seriously and be well prepared for such possibilities. In addition the Environmental Agency is keen that steps be put in place to reduce the need for clean water or mains water supplies. An industry that has shown steps to conserving water is Horticulture. Lake liners used in reservoir construction and water storage tanks have enabled the successful collection and storage of rainwater.

Water tanks can be found on residential, commercial or industrial properties. They are used for many different types of applications, though fundamentally their sole purpose is for storing water. Corrugated types are lined with a tank liner to keep them water tight and to preserve the tank long-term. They are installed to supply water for main uses mostly with the aim to reduce mains supply usage and as a contingency during times of drought.

Above and below the ground-level water-storage tanks are becoming an important feature of many communities for the effective distribution of water. However, despite the huge benefit of the storage tanks, they can become a liability if not maintained. Steel tanks that are not properly lined may develop leaks as a result of the onset of corrosion.

Corrugated steel tanks are used to store ground water for irrigation use, fire protection and household use. They are also used for harvesting rainwater which can be used for irrigation purposes of crops and commercial or domestic gardens. Water, for all its uses needs to be stored in clean, well maintained tanks. Water tank liners prevent corrosion and damage to the inner lining of storage tanks thus preventing water from becoming tainted and contaminated.

Water means life and healthy water is needed in all aspects of our lives, both commercial and domestic. Water Management Systems are used extensively in industries such as horticulture, maintenance of sports grounds and fish keeping to ensure adequate, healthy supplies of water. As part of this management system water is collected and stored in galvanised or aluminium storage tanks, which are effectively lined to keep them water tight and reduce the effects of evaporation as much as possible. Materials such as Butyl and EPDM rubber liner materials have proven highly effective tank liners. Here are some of the reasons why:
