How successful is a rubber roofing membrane?
Wednesday, June 04, 2014
Rubber roofing membranes were introduced to the building market in the 1960's and have a 50 year history of use. EPDM rubber roofing membrane has been used in the most demanding situations to stop water seeping through roofs onto the content of residential homes and industrial properties.
EPDM rubber roofing membranes are now routinely used for flat roofs replacing the three layer felt system that was commonly used. The difference between these two roofing systems is that EPDM has over a three times longer life span, it can be recycled and the water that runs off this roofing system is safe to use in 'grey water' recycling.
EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. The membrane designed for numerous waterproofing applications offers durability, superior resistance to degradation from UV light, excellent flexibility and guaranteed waterproofing properties. EPDM rubber is used in roofing membranes as well as many other applications including door seals, window seals and pond liners. It is a thoroughly researched product with over 50 years use in waterproofing applications.
Roofs are subject to direct sunlight and temperature variations. As the roof structure expands and contracts with these temperature changes, EPDM roofing membrane stretches to accommodate these variations without compromising the waterproofing properties.
EPDM roofing membranes have become a product of choice for flat roof extensions replacing the more traditional three layer felt system due to its relatively short lifespan of 10 -15 years. Two key advantages of EPDM roofing applications in addition to its waterproofing superiority, is that it is environmentally of a high standard as it can be recycled and no toxins are released so rainwater run off from the roof is clean enough to use in 'grey water' recycling.
The EPDM rubber roofing membrane can be applied to new or existing roofs of all types.
The membrane is supplied in sheets. For small roofs this is ideal as one sheet may cover the entire roof. If more than one sheet is required, however, EPDM rubber can be hot bonded together to maintain waterproofing properties.
