A bladder surge vessel is a storage reservoir at the downstream end or a dam or reservoir to absorb sudden rises of pressure and to provide extra water during a brief drop in pressure.
Surge vessels can either be horizontal or vertical. They are composed of steel and contain a rubber bladder made from Butyl rubber and a flange connection pipe.
The function of a Butyl rubber bladder is to form a barrier between the air and water and to help prevent corrosion thereby making tanks virtually maintenance free.
Butyl is a synthetic rubber that has very low gas permeability making it suitable high pressure applications. It offers excellent resistance to heat, UV radiation and weathering.
