Water availability and supply is an important subject to the fire service. Potable water for human consumption is delivered to domestic, commercial and industrial properties from (in the majority of cases in the UK) municipal water systems (mains water supplies). This system also supplies to fire hydrants or fire protection systems, but to guarantee water availability there also needs to be the provision of non-mains water from storage facilities installed particularly at locations such as warehouses and factories.
There are many types of water storage facilities for fire protection. Constructed facilities include elevated, ground-level or below the ground metal or rubberised storage tanks. Natural facilities include ponds, lakes and reservoirs. These water storage facilities and pump suction devices are of huge importance to fire protection systems. To guarantee an adequate and useable water supply, systems need to be properly designed and installed to withstand adverse environmental and weather conditions. Water needs to be well contained and free of debris and contaminants.
For the past 150 years fire water storage tanks have been part of industrial fire protection systems. Today they are available in a range of sizes and capacities. Corrugated steel storage tanks are still a popular option for storing large volumes of liquids. For those responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of these tanks, it is extremely important to maintain the integrity. Metal loss from internal and external corrosion can reduce the service life of the tank. Through the installation of a
rubber tank liner and cathodic protection, the interior corrosion of water storage tanks can be effectively controlled. The direct benefits are prevention of contamination of the stored water and fewer tank repairs thereby extending the life of the tank.
Water storage tanks can be fitted with tailor made either Butyl or
EPDM flexible synthetic rubber liners. Russetts is a leading supplier of rubber
tank liners to the fire protection industry. Please
