How to accurately calculate pond liner and underlay dimensions required

Butyl and EPDM rubber pond liners are a popular choice for pond, lake or reservoir construction. Used for the containment of water, Rubber pond liners offer great design flexibility and are environmentally friendly for ponds and lakes of all sizes. In this article we will take you through the important steps to accurately measure the exact dimensions of a build to ensure the correct size of pond liner is ordered.

Measuring the dimensions of a pond is a straightforward process irrespective of whether the pond is kidney-shaped, square, rectangular or circular. Here are the steps to measuring a pond, lake or reservoir intended for a pond liner installation:

  • Measure the longest length,
  • Measure the widest width,
  • Take measurement for the deepest depth,

Once you have those figures, you then need to add one side (Length or Width) to two times the depth plus amount needed for the overlap (minimum of 0.2″ or 0.15 meters). The depth of the pond needs to be multiplied by two because the pond liner needs to go down one side of the pond and back up the other side. The overlap is the portion of pond liner which will go over the lip of the pond on which edging material is placed to secure the pond liner.

The pond liner calculation will look like this

Length + (2 x Depth) +2” = Total Length of Liner

Width + (2 x Depth) + 2” = Total Width of Liner

The size of pond liner required can be calculated as: Maximum length + (2 x maximum depth of pond) x maximum width + (2 x maximum depth).

L-Shaped ponds

  • Measure the maximum depth
  • Measure the length of the two outer longest sides of the pond
  • Multiply the maximum depth measurement by three and add it to the two longest lengths of your pond to get pond liner dimensions required

Ponds with an island or raised plinth

  • Measure the maximum depth of pond and multiply this by four,
  • Measure length and width of pond
  • 4 x maximum depth + length x width = pond dimension

Hot bond to make one large pond liner

For large pond or lake construction single sheets of your choice of rubber pond liner can be completely fabricated using hot air machines to hot bonding together to the right size and shape of the project. RDL ensure that good, professional workmanship practices are followed ensuring that the seams where pond liner sheets have been joined together won't leak.

There are no limitations to the shape and size of a pond when it comes to installing a pond liner - taking proper measurements ensures the job is done to a high standard with limited wastage.
