Discover bespoke pond liner installation techniques

Rustts Developments are water containment specialisst with a wealth of experience installing pond liners

For the majority of pond construction projects, the installation of a pond liner and protective underlay is a straight forward process provided adequate planning and preparation are in place. However, relining a pond due to water leakage can be challenging where well established landscape surrounds the pond or there is particular value in the edging material used. Although any pond can be repaired and relined, the right expertise are needed to be bought in and the most appropriate materials used for more challenging repair projects.

Russetts Developments Ltd (RDL) have many years experience in water containment and in that time have refurbished a number of ponds and water storage tanks amongst many other projects. Pond relining and refurbishment, particularly those of historic value often dictate that the aesthetics of the edging material and landscape can't be disturbed.

RDL have completed bespoke pond liner installation projects using unique techniques

Refurbishment of Buscot Park’s Peto water garden feature (Grade II listing), which consists of a series of formal ornamental ponds, weirs, cascades and canals required the new pond liner to go no higher than water level to avoid covering the original stone features. Due to the shape and size of the water feature it meant that the pond liner had to be fabricated onsite to ensure a perfect fit. Protective geotextile underlay was installed first to protect the liner from the stone and concrete pond floor. This was followed by the installation of the fabricated 1.2mm Flagon GeoP TPO membrane. In order to secure the liner, a 3mm chase was cut into the existing stone work at water level. An L-shaped laminated metal strip was then inserted inside the chase hanging vertically down to which the Flagon TPO membrane was welded. The chase was then sealed with a waterproof and fish friendly mastic sealant.

The use of tailored and box welded liners for vertically sided ponds (rectangles, circles or L-shapes) where excessive folds and creases need to be avoided. These are fabricated from either 1.0mm EPDM or 0.75mm Butyl rubber.
