Waterproofing membranes for bespoke projects

When Russetts Development was contracted to refurbish Buscot Park's Petro Water Garden, they were faced with two unique challenges. Firstly, this project involved refurbishment of a Grade II listed water garden, which meant that no modern sealant solutions could be used in the installation of the liner. The second challenge was the complexity of the structure and that no pond liner membranes were to be visible above the water line.

Russetts Developments chose to line the water feature with a TPO waterproofing membrane (Thermoplastice Polyolefin). This decision was based on its unique formulation and its ability to be fabricated on site and installed with no visible creases. EPDM and TPO pond liners both offer excellent weather-ability, long-term strength and flexibility as well as high resistance to punctures and tears. But, for this project TPO was used because it can be welded together with hot air creating one continuous sheet membrane.

Product features of TPO membrane:

  • High tensile strength
  • Oxidation resistant
  • Resists biological growth
  • Flexible and therefore able to install in complex pond designs
  • Elongation stability
  • UV rays resistance
  • Stable across a vast range of temperatures
  • Non-toxic to fish and other aquatic creatures
  • Resistant to puncturing by roots and microorganisms
  • Adapts to structural movements
  • Environment and user friendly
  • Life expectancy in excess of 25 years

Product features of TPO membrane

TPO membranes and EPDM rubber liners are both an excellent choice for waterproofing projects particularly in roofing. EPDM pond liners are the more popular option for pond installations, but for more bespoke type projects, TPO offers a further choice because sheets can be hot welded together versus bonding therefore giving a smoother finish for complex box-type water features.
