The trick to guaranteed water containment and waterproofing solutions
Friday, August 08, 2014
The real trick to guaranteeing longterm water containment or waterproofing solutions is to invest in material that will withstand the forces of nature over a life time. A type of synthetic rubber membrane known as EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) has proven success in a number of application types by offering outstanding resistance to heat, UV rays, ozone and extreme weather conditions. It's versatility is based on the fact that it can be fabricated into various size sheets.
Russetts Developments Ltd (RDL) specialize in the supply of EPDM rubber membrane used in the containment of water or for various waterproofing applications. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), is a type of synthetic rubber. RDL import uncut sheets of EPDM rubber in rolls of 0.75mm, 0.85mm and 1.0mm thicknesses direct from SealEco International (HQ) based in Varnamo, Sweden.
EPDM rubber is used in a wide range of applications such as pond liners (including liners for lakes, reservoirs and slurry lagoons), water storage tank liners, roofing membranes (since it does not pollute the run-off rainwater, which is of vital importance for rainwater harvesting), waterproofing strips and geomembranes
EPDM water containment and waterproofing membrane application types:
Lake liner and pond liner applications: We have chosen to name the SealEco EPDM rubber, “Epalyn EP” to distinguish it from other suppliers of the product.
Although slightly more flexible than Butyl, Epalyn EP rubber is similar in appearance but has some superior physical properties such as tear and tensile strength. EPDM rubber pond liners are very popular in the UK, however not all EPDM rubbers can be vulcanised together and can only be joined with tape and adhesive glues, which means the liner is no longer pliable. Epalyn EP rubber can be vulcanised into most shapes and sizes providing a secure watertight joint between sheets.
Epalyn EP rubber liners are supplied with a lifetime guarantee on pond liners up to 100m2 and 25 years for larger sheets. Epalyn EP rubber is available to order in pre-packs and by the rolls.
Russetts Development’s Epalyn EP is the perfect liner to use in all types of demanding waterproofing applications.
Waterproofing applications: EPDM waterproofing strips provide an excellent solution to the potential threat of water leakage. Many window and cladding systems or building facades require a waterproof seal between the frame and the substrate and EPDM membrane provides an unbroken moisture barrier that can accommodate structural flexing.
The EPDM membranes, with their cross-linked molecular structure, have negligible aging over time, despite exposure to the atmosphere, sunlight, UV radiation, chemical pollutions, water and extremes of temperature. EPDM contain no plasticisers which can leach out over time or migrate to other materials. The strength and elasticity remains virtually unchanged over decades, without shrinkage, melting, hardening or cracking, and the membrane remains flexible at temperatures from -40 to + 150°C.
Tank liner applications: Tank liners are supplied to the UK, European and Worldwide markets. We have a renowned reputation for being the country’s leading supplier of rubber tank liners to the fire protection industry. RDL have supplied thousands of tank liners over the past thirty years to every continent across the world. RDL were the first rubber tank liner manufacture to introduce the steel eyelet to the top circumference of the tank liner to co-inside with the bolt pitch of individual tank manufacturers tank panels. This vastly improved the installation and security of the hanging liner and has now become the tank lining industry’s standard method of circular tank liner installation.
We were also the first tank lining supplier to introduce the full one piece stitched geotextile protective matting bag. This was designed to protect the liner from extreme heat and cold temperatures radiated through the tank panel sheets and to protect the liner during tank installation and to cushion the liner from floating ice damage. This product has been used extensively throughout Europe Asia and Africa, providing continuous protection to our tank liners in all types of extreme weather conditions.
RDL have extensive experience in providing liners for the following types of tanks:
• Aluminum / Galvanized cylindrical bolted panel sprinkler and potable water storage tanks.
• Elevated rectangular sectional GRP/pressed steel tanks.
• Shaped concrete above and below ground basement tanks.
• WRC approved drinking water tanks.
The trick to guaranteeing success in water containment and water proofing projects is to invest in material that is easy to install, withstands a range of weather conditions and has a proven track record of success. EPDM rubber tank liners have been used in the fire protection industry for over forty years.
